Detention (Chinese: 返校; pinyin: Fǎnxiào) is a Taiwanese supernatural horror drama series produced by Netflix and the Public Television Service, adapted from the video game created by Red Candle Games. The eight-episode series premiered on 5 December 2020, airing one episode each Saturday at 21:00 National Standard Time, and is part of Netflix’s Chinese Language Originals collection.
Set during the White Terror period of martial law in Taiwan, the story blends political oppression with local folklore and ghostly legends. The plot begins in 1999 at Greenwood High School, where transfer student Yunxiang Liu (played by Lingwei Lee) ventures into a restricted area and meets the ghost of Ray-Xin Fang (Ning Han). Fang reveals the school’s hidden past over three decades, including how students and teachers were persecuted while fighting for freedom under a regime of censorship.
The cast also includes Guang-Zhi Huan as Wen-Liang Cheng, Yao Chun-yao, Hsia Teng-hung as Chang Ming-hui, and David Chao.
