Bag of Bones (miniseries)

Bag of Bones, also known as Stephen King's Bag of Bones, is an American Gothic horror television miniseries based on the author's 1998 novel. Mick Garris directed the project from a script by Matt Venne. It originally aired on the A&E Network in two installments during 2011. When Channel 5 broadcast it on 29 December 2012, the program was presented as a single film running 162 minutes.

The story follows Mike Noonan, a bestselling novelist whose wife, Jo, is struck and killed by a bus while crossing the street after a book signing. As she dies in his arms, Mike discovers she bought a pregnancy test; because he has a low sperm count and believed they could not conceive, he suspects she may have been unfaithful. Grief-stricken and suffering writer's block, Mike experiences recurring nightmares about his wife and their summer home on Dark Score Lake in Maine. On his brother Sid's advice, he travels there.

At the lake, Mike befriends Mattie Devore, a young widow, and her six-year-old daughter, Kyra. This friendship angers Mattie's estranged father-in-law, Max Devore, who is fighting for custody of Kyra after Mattie shot her husband Lance for trying to drown the child. Despite the tension, Mike begins writing again, but visions and nightmares convince him something else is present. He discovers Jo's spirit lingers, along with the ghost of a 1930s singer named Sara Tidwell, whose records play and who appears in dreams of her final day alive in 1939. Mike also learns about "Dark Score Crazy," a madness that drove local men to drown their daughters.

Max and his assistant confront Mike in the lake. Max then offers to drop the custody battle if Mike drops any charges and leaves them alone. Mike agrees, and Max commits suicide. At the funeral, Mike meets Edgar White, an old friend of his grandfather. Edgar confesses that he, Mike's grandfather, and two other men helped Max rape and murder Sara Tidwell and drown her daughter, Keisha. With her dying breath, Sara cursed the men's descendants to drown their own daughters. The men buried Sara with her daughter in the woods.

Mike tells Mattie this story. She concludes that Jo, who was pregnant, returned to Dark Score to investigate the curse on Mike's bloodline—not to cheat on him. Mattie is suddenly shot and killed in a manner Mike had dreamed, but she begs him to care for Kyra. Mike flees to his home, pursued by Mattie'
